Where do I start?

I guess the best place to start is the beginning. Chronologically. So rewind a week ago... and we had Charlotte's birthday. Number 6! The biggie! After this it will be just a couple friends for pizza and a movie or a sleep over or something way LESS work. Not that any future birthday isn't important, it is, however it is clear that strong friendship bonds are being formed and it is nice to spend special times with special people. So I booked a pool and we went swimming. I told Charlotte to pick 12 friends and then we have siblings, a few non-school friends and neighbours and that brought us to 18 kids. Enough. It is a little stressful not knowing how many parents we would need in the water. I have to say that I was put in an awkward position right before the swimming began. There was a little girl at the party who's big brother wanted to swim. Normally I don't have a problem with these types of things but this time it was different. This kid is the same kid who for nearly 3 months tormented Charlotte. He called her names, pushed her into seats on the bus and made her start to school hell. So I had a big problem with this! However I have had a lot of time to observe this kid. I've spoke to teachers and other parents about him. I had some pretty strong opinions. Yes if I could have shipped him to another planet I might have, however people are not born mean, they learn to be mean. And now I was in the position to either re-enforce exclusion or to show some kindness. Yes I did process this all while staring at his father in disbelief at the question. So I set out some very strict rules for this kid. Which included not playing with or bothering any of the kids at the party. Plus I said, I would not be watching him, and his dad would supervise him from the side of the pool. So then I had to break it to Charlotte that the kid she is terrified of, is now going to show up at her birthday party. She took it well, and I think forgot all about him once they got into the pool. She had an absolute blast! She wanted a Hello Kitty cake, she got tonnes of gifts, and all the kids had a blast. They climbed the rock wall and fell into water, they went down the slide, well not Charlotte she got cold feet at the top. For the boys I got them water squirters. It was difficult to take photos and a mom helped me a bit, but I was so busy with that many kids in the water. But one photo for only my memory (no camera at the time) was of Robbie and Drake on a foam boat spraying Drake's dad. They were having the time of their lives! Oh and I nearly forgot... earlier in the day Charlotte passed her swimming lesson and can swim really well now. She was so proud of herself.

Let the party start...

The swarm of kids all wanting to see the presents.

I'll now skip forward a few days, and one of my greatest fears nearly came true again. Everyone of course knows that James passed away, and we don't know what caused his death. We are fairly certain that a seizure played a significant role. Whether a seizure came first, second or last I'll never know but I know with all my heart he had one that night. On Thursday we had just come home from work/school/daycare and I was making supper, Robbie was playing with his cars, Mae was doing a puzzle and Charlotte was colouring. Charlotte asked for a drink, I started to pour some milk, looked over at Mae to ask if she wanted some milk and she was standing there shaking her head but no sound was coming out. I went to her and saw a vacant look, drool and realized she wasn't in control of the shaking. I won't go into all the terrifying details as at the exact moment I grabbed her and carried her to the living room she was in full convulsions. The seizure lasted nearly 10 minutes. It was as terrifying as you could only imagine. I'd called the ambulance, and by the time they arrived she was done convulsing but her blood pressure was through the roof, her pulse too was high. She need to go to the emergency room. Thank god for neighbours who watched over Charlotte and Robbie for me as Mike wasnt' home yet. So here are the concerning points of the seizure. The biggest is she had no fever and has no infection. Often fevers that change quickly will start a seizure, and as we know fevers are caused by infection. We are hanging a lot on the fact that while in hospital she did get a fever. It was a small one and only lasted about 2 hours. But still no ear infection, no bladder infection, chest infection etc etc. The other thing the paramedics and doctors didn't like was that the seizure was close to 10 minutes. They don't like if it goes past 10 minutes. The other thing was how slowly she came around, it was 20 minutes until she could even swallow again. Talking took longer, movements even longer. There was a time that I feared she would be permanently damaged. The good news is she is back to herself. The doctors kept her over night, mostly for my sanity as I was clearly and visibly distraught. So where are we? I don't really know. I'd love to have some answers but it became clear very fast that I would not be getting any. I'd love to relax, but I don't know how I can. I just recently started to relax while the kids sleep and feel like I've jumped back years. I am back to getting up every couple of hours to check on them. I'm back laying in bed paralyzed until I hear a sigh, a roll or something sound to tell me that they are okay. But no one can help me climb this ladder again. I was so close to coming out of a pit, and am right back there. My only wish, which has ever been my only wish is for healthy kids.

Despite exhaustion and fear we still celebrated Easter in style. We still rock around the house and keep going as we normally would. Hey, Mae isn't slowing down, so we can't. Here are some photos.

A very Good Friday indeed. Mae got out of the hospital just in time to colour eggs.

Sienna hit a yard sale and found some wigs and a microphone. She said she knew just the family that would put them to good use. And did they ever, we had the first Hudson Music Concert on the deck. Mae went first.

Robbie brought out his inner rock star. Wow... this kid can R-O-C-K
At one point he ditched the microphone and just kept on rocking!!! What can I say he sings from the heart!

After the rock number, Charlotte serenaded us with a love song.

Even after bath time Mae dawned her new favorite hair-do.

Once he was finished rocking, Robbie morphed into Black Spiderman. He was on the trampoline... probably fighting bad guys.

Easter morning... let the egg hunt begin.

Happy Easter... we woke to 15cm of snow. It almost felt like Christmas, but instead of a snowman, we made a snowbunny complete with Jelly Bean eyes, mouth and nose.
